Numerous men have been charged in Canada and the United States with various crimes related to a plot to arm the Tamil Tigers who are listed as a terrorist organization in both countries. Some are accused of plotting to buy surface-to-air missiles and AK-47 rifles that would have been sent to the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka. Eight people, including three Canadian citizens, were charged in Brooklyn, New York yesterday with various offences. At the same time the Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested a 26-year-old in Ontario in relation to the plot. He faces extradition to the United States.
Charges against the nine include fundraising and money laundering through US bank accounts and charitable organizations for the Liberation Tigers of Talim Eelam, or Tamil Tigers, who have been fighting the Sri Lankan military in a civil war since 1983.
Two of the men allegedly tried to bribe undercover US State Department officials with $1 million in order to remove the Tigers from the official list of terrorist organizations which bars the group from raising money, obtaining weapons or lobbying. A more extensive investigation ensued involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Joint Terrorism Task Force.
The RCMP was brought in when the FBI learned of a Canadian allegedly being involved. Ultimately, the three Canadians arrested in the United States are accused of travelling to New York to purchase the military equipment including 50 to 100 SAM missiles, assault rifles, truck mounted missiles, aerial vehicles for jamming radio transmissions and radar, submarine design software as well as flight lessons and military training.

On Wednesday, the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure chose to let Doctor Carroll Frazier Landrum keep his physician’s license, following an investigation sparked by an anonymous complaint. Media reported the Mississippi doctor has been working out of his Toyota Camry for about two years, making house calls to see patients.
The investigation, started earlier this year, reportedly centered around Dr. Landrum having no physical office thus possibly being unable to properly store patient records.
Volunteers are presently renovating the former post office in the town of Edwards, Mississippi, United States for the doctor to have an office. Estimations indicate the new office should be ready by early next month. Landrum, 89, closed his Edwards office two years ago. Landrum has routinely seen three or four patients per day since that time. Reportedly, illegal drug activity in the vicinity of his office placed him in danger. The doctor stated he was told his physical safety was in jeopardy.
Becoming tearful, Dr. Landrum told reporters he’s glad he’s been able to help so many people and “give them some hope and relief, and help them survive.” Landrum has assured the medical board he will refresh his training with a medical record-keeping course. According to Landrum’s attorneys, at first the board were unwilling to release their investigative records, although ultimately they did release some of the documents.
Things you should understand before buying a truck through commercial financing
by
johndavide
If you are in the market for a new or used commercial truck or commercial trailer, there are a few things that you should be sure you understand prior to making a purchase through commercial financing.
First, you should know that structure of your financial transaction will be prepared according to your credit score and your financial situation. This means that the rate that you receive will be determined based on your personal credit score and the amount of cash flow that you have flowing through your business. Many commercial truck lenders have set standards of credit criteria that must be met in order to receive financing. At a lot of the different commercial truck lenders the minimum credit score allowed is 650. With this in mind, you will be able to select a commercial finance company whose credit requirements you can meet. Another thing that you should understand is the age restrictions upheld by many commercial lending institutions. A lot of the commercial truck financing companies have age restrictions. This is really to protect their self interest in the vehicles, which is certainly understandable from a business perspective. Most the time, the age restrictions are as follows: Ten years or newer for a commercial truck; Seven years or newer for a commercial trailer. Age restrictions on commercial equipment are something that is important for you to understand when you are considering buying a truck or trailer by using commercial financing. You want to be sure that the equipment that you choose will fall under the age restriction guidelines of your commercial truck lender. Otherwise, you will have to select new equipment, or a new lender, and this could significantly set back your funding time frame. Another thing for you to know before buying a with commercial financing
is the difference between a commercial vehicle loan and a commercial vehicle lease. Many commercial lending institutions will offer both options, and you may be able to choose which option is going to be best for your business. A commercial vehicle loan will most likely require that you put down a hefty down payment, whereas a commercial vehicle lease will usually only require the first and last months payments up front.
Another difference between a loan and a lease is the way they reflect on your financial statement. A commercial vehicle loan will reflect the entire amount of the purchase as a debt, but with a commercial lease, all that is reflected as debt is your monthly payment not the entire amount of your lease. So, instead of showing that you have a debt of $40,000, your financial statement will only reflect whatever amount your monthly payment is, for example, $900. Before applying for commercial truck financing, be sure that you know how much per month you will be willing to pay for the new equipment because you dont want to over extend yourself. Also, keep in mind how much income you anticipate the new equipment to generate and weigh that against the monthly payment amount. You want to make sure that acquiring new equipment will be beneficial to your cash flow.

Preston, Victoria, Australia —On Saturday, Wikinews interviewed Tina McKenzie, a former member of the Australia women’s national wheelchair basketball team, known as the Gliders. McKenzie, a silver and bronze Paralympic medalist in wheelchair basketball, retired from the game after the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. Wikinews caught up with her in a cafe in the leafy Melbourne suburb of Preston.
((Wikinews)) Who plays in that one?
((WN)) It’s not the same.
((WN)) Was that the one where you were the captain of the team, in 2005? Or was that a later one?
((WN)) The Gliders have never won the World Championship.
((WN)) Unfortunately, they are talking about moving it so it will be on the year before the Paralympics.
((WN)) The competition from the [FIFA] World Cup and all.
((WN)) But anyway, it is on next year, in June. In Toronto, and they are playing at the Maple Leaf Gardens?
((WN)) I don’t know either!
((WN)) We’ll find it. The team in Bangkok was pretty similar. There’s two — yourself and Amanda Carter — who have retired. Katie Hill wasn’t selected, but they had Kathleen O’Kelly-Kennedy back, so there was ten old players and only two new ones.
((WN)) Caitlin de Wit.
((WN)) No, she’s missed out again.
((WN)) That doesn’t mean that she won’t make the team…
((WN)) You never know until they finally announce it.
((WN)) They said to me that they expected a couple of people to get sick in Bangkok. And they did.
((WN)) They sort of budgeted for three players each from the men’s and women’s teams to be sick.
((WN)) Yeah. I sort of took to counting the Gliders like sheep so I knew “Okay, we’ve only go ten, so who’s missing?”
((WN)) She was sick the whole time. And Caitlin and Georgia were a bit off as well.
((WN)) The change of diet affects some people.
((WN)) When was that?
((WN)) 2007 or 2008?
((WN)) Yeah, well, the men are going to Seoul for their world championship, while the women go to Toronto. And of course the next Paralympics is in Rio.
((WN)) It will be a very different climate and very different food.
((WN)) One of the things that struck me about the Australian team — I hadn’t seen the Gliders before London. It was an amazing experience seeing you guys come out on the court for the first time at the Marshmallow…
((WN)) It was probably all old hat to you guys. You’d been practicing for months. Certainly since Sydney in July.
((WN)) Especially that last night there at the North Greenwich Arena. There were thirteen thousand people there. They opened up some extra parts of the stadium. I could not even see the top rows. They were in darkness.
((WN)) When I saw you last you were in Sydney and you said you were moving down to Melbourne. Why was that?
((WN)) I know you lived here for a long time, but you moved up to Sydney. Did your teacher’s degree up there.
((WN)) And you like teaching?
((WN)) You retired just after the Paralympics.
((WN)) Your basketball career or your teaching career?
((WN)) When did you join them for the first time?
((WN)) That would be good.
((WN)) Where are they all at?
((WN)) It’s not really because…
((WN)) Yeah, they kept on pointing that out…
((WN)) Sounds like a basketball player already.
((WN)) Something I noticed in the crowd in London. People seemed to think that they were in the chair all the time and were surprised when most of the Rollers got up out of their chairs at the end of the game.
((WN)) Disability is a very complicated thing.
((WN)) I was surprised myself at people who were always in a chair, but yet can wiggle their toes.
((WN)) Also talking to the classifiers and they mentioned the people playing [wheelchair] basketball who have no disability at all but are important to the different teams, that carry their bags and stuff.
((WN)) Getting women to play sport, whether disabled or not, is another story. And there seems to be a reluctance amongst women to participate in sports, particularly sports that they regard as being men’s sports.
((WN)) They would much rather play a sport that is a women’s sport.
((WN)) Where is it?
((WN)) How does Victoria compare with New South Wales?
((WN)) At the moment you’ll notice a large contingent of Gliders from Western Australia.
((WN)) The news recently has been Basketball Australia taking over the running of things. The Gliders now have a full time coach.
((WN)) I’m sure he is.
((WN)) Did you do some work with him?
((WN)) Watching the Gliders and the Rollers… with the Rollers, they can do it. With the Gliders… much more drama from the Gliders in London. For a time we didn’t even know if they were going to make the finals. Lost that game against Canada.
((WN)) Apparently.
((WN)) You said you played over 100 [international] games. By our count there was 176 before you went to London, plus two games there makes 178 international caps. Which is more than some teams that you played against put together.
((WN)) You need to prove it.
((WN)) Before every game in London there was an announcement that at the World Championships and the Paralympics “they have never won”.
((WN)) You were in the final game in 2004.
((WN)) What was it like?
((WN)) The best team on the court on the day.
((WN)) I’d like to see that happen. I’d really like to see them win. In Toronto, apparently, because the Canadian men are not in the thing, the Canadians are going to be focusing on their women’s team. They apparently didn’t take their best team and their men were knocked out by Columbia or Mexico or something like that.
((WN)) And in the women’s competition there’s teams like Peru. But I remember in London that Gliders were wrong-footed by Brazil, a team that they had never faced before. Nearly lost that game.
((WN)) They’ll definitely be an interesting side when it comes to Rio.
((WN)) They’re a tough team too.
((WN)) The Germans lost to the Americans in the final in Beijing.
((WN)) And between 2008 and 2012 all they talked about was the US, and a rematch against the US. But of course when it came to London, they didn’t face the US at all, because you guys knocked the US out of the competition.
((WN)) You won by a point.
((WN)) It went down to a final shot. There was a chance that the Americans would win the thing with a shot after the siren. Well, a buzzer-beater.
((WN)) Thankyou very much for this.

An advertising campaign for shows on Adult Swim, a programming block on Cartoon Network, which is owned by Turner Broadcasting, gave local and federal law-enforcement a scare when devices were discovered on eight different bridges and roads.
The U.S. city of Boston was snarled in traffic jams January 31 as police investigated devices with flashing lights representing a cartoon character were placed around bridges and other areas throughout the city.
Different governmental agencies were brought in to help deal with the problem, which was later found to be no threat, as described by Boston Police Department spokesperson Eddy Chrispin. A bomb squad was deployed under supervision of the FBI, Boston police, the US Coast Guard, and different federal agencies.
The advertising campaign, for the widely popular program Aqua Teen Hunger Force, featuring characters from that series, was in place for two to three weeks in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and many other major US cities.
Two people have been arrested for alleged participation in this incident.
Turner Broadcasting Systems hired New York marketing firm Interference Inc. which in turn hired individuals in the various cities to place the devices promoting the cartoon’s fifth season, scheduled for a February 23 premiere. Road and rail traffic was disrupted by police as they investigated and removed the devices.
The mostly flat devices resemble two-foot-square Lite-Brites with batteries attached to the bottom and visible wires.
G4TV has dubbed the incident “Aquagate” on its broadcast of Attack of the Show segment The Feed.
It is not known why the devices took police several weeks to notice, nor why the devices were believed to be dangerous.
Friday, March 18, 2005Probably one of the first good things to come out of the 2004 Tsunami in Asia, ancient ruins were discovered in India. Fishermen along the shores report seeing the ruins along the shoreline near Mahabalipuram when the waters receded just prior to the arrival of the tsunami. Mahabalipuram is a port city of South India, dating back to the 7th century, around 60 km south from the city of Chennai in Tamil Nadu.
The fishermen reported a complex consisting of ancient temples. Some mention seeing at least 20 distinct temples, and hundreds of refrigerator-sized blocks. The walls were covered with barnacles, coral and mud. Local folklore tells of an ancient port in the area.
On the shore, three structures consisting of elaborate carvings in the shape of animals were uncovered. The structures appear to have been covered in sand, which had been wiped away by the force of the tsunami. The structures appear to belong to a port city built in the 7th century, said T. Satyamurthy, a senior archaeologist with the Archaeological Survey of India. The sculptures, representing an elephant, a lion and a flying horse, were commonly used during the Pallava dynasty, which ran from the 4th to the 9th century, archeologists say.
The temples along the shores of Mahabalipuram are already a famous feature of the city, and have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Legend has it that the city was home to seven pagodas. Underwater excavations of the area by the archaeological society, run by the Indian government and navy divers, began on Thursday.
Solve Your Financial Problems With Tax Deferred Retirement Annuities
by
Simon Cronje
The post-retirement phase of old aged individuals is full of difficulties. They are not only mentally insecure, but also feel the insecurity in financial terms. Many institutions have made available certain schemes so that the senior citizens could lead a comfortable life when they retire. Retirement annuities are the plans that have been introduced to serve this purpose. These are the schemes which have been designed to ensure a fret free life to the people when they get old. Several forms of annuity programs have come into focus in recent times, among which tax deferred annuity schemes are preferred hugely by major number of old public.
Retirement annuities are contracts between an individual and an insurance company. During his service period, the individual contributes a particular percentage of his income to his retirement annuity fund. This fund, after his retirement acts as an efficient source of income for him. It can, simply, be considered as his savings since his working period, in order to make his life comfortable and financially stable during the advanced stage. With the popularity of these programs, there are several schemes that have been introduced for the retirees. In order to avail the benefits, however, an annuitant can choose a program that is best suitable for his needs. According to his requirements, he might opt for releasing retirement annuities for a specific period of time or even for his lifetime.
Tax deferred annuity enables people to receive scheduled payments for post-retirement phase as soon as they enroll for these schemes offered by the insurance companies. The uniqueness of this program is that it provides an individual a chance to postpone paying their taxes on the interest that they earn from their annuity amount. As a result of this, the retirees get an opportunity to increase the savings that they have made in the retirement fund, which in turn increments their earning after retirement. In spite of being a bit costly, tax deferred annuity deals are preferred by the annuitants because of the tax deferment option that it offers.
Until and unless the annuitants withdraw the amount from their retirement fund, they are not likely to pay any kind of taxes, in case of the tax deferred annuity. Unlike traditional savings or investment amount, this scheme will help the old aged citizens save more money for collecting an hefty sum after they get retired, which in turn removes all the financial worries at the advanced stage of their life. As soon as the interest starts being earned, it will continue to supplement the amount. Retirement annuities, however, are classified into two categories, fixed annuity and variable annuity. In the former classification, the principal amount of the individual is guaranteed and fixed, whereas in case of the latter, it keeps on changing based on certain factors.
While choosing a scheme from available list of
retirement annuities
, you must check the annuity rates offered by different companies. The companies with higher premium rates should be selected so that the interest given on the sum is more. In case of
tax deferred annuity
, however, as soon as an individual turns 59 and a half, he is eligible to receive the payments from the annuity, beginning his phase of paying taxes.

Rod Blagojevich, the former governor of the US state of Illinois, was indicted on Thursday on charges of corruption for allegedly planning to “sell” Barack Obama’s Senate seat when the latter vacated it to become President.
Five of his advisers, including Blagojevich’s brother Robert, were also indicted. The others are former fundraiser, Christopher Kelly, former chief of staff John Harris, former aide Lon Monk, and the lobbyist William Cellini.
A jury indicted Blagojevich on sixteen felony counts, among them wire fraud, extortion conspiracy, and racketeering conspiracy. The indictment states that if convicted, the ex-governor could face over three hundred years in prison, as well as US$4 million worth of fines, including restitution.
The governor insists that he did nothing illegal, and claims that he was the victim of a politically motivated witch hunt. He pledged to fight his charges in court.
“I’m saddened and hurt but I am not surprised by the indictment. I am innocent,” read a statement released by Blagojevich. “I now will fight in the courts to clear my name. I would ask the good people of Illinois to wait for the trial and afford me the presumption of innocence that they would give to all their friends and neighbors.”
Blagojevich, a governor serving his second term, was arrested on December 9 of last year on charges of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud. Shortly thereafter, the Illinois House impeached him before the Senate, which nearly unanimously convicted him and expelled him from office.

General Motors Corporation (GM), an American automaker which has filed for bankruptcy protection, announced on Friday that the Penske Automotive Group (PAG) was selected to purchase Saturn Corporation. The transaction should be completed in October.
The purchase includes rights to the Saturn brand, its five current models and its dealership network. Two models would be discontinued, the Sky and Astra. GM would continue building the Aura sedan, the SUV’s, Vue and Outlook for at least two more years.
Saturn has 350 dealers across the United States. The dealers employ more than 13,000 jobs and sell only the Saturn autos. Canadian Saturn dealers are not included in the deal.
According to Penske future Saturn vehicles will be fuel economy focused. An expert indicated that this would move Saturn back to its roots of a entry level car company. PAG is in talks with several international automakers to replace GM after 2011. Automotive News reports that Renault Samsung Motors of Korea is the most likely candidate.
Penske wants Jill Lajdziak, Saturn’s general manager, and Tom LaSorda, former Chrysler President to head up the company when it is independent of GM.
Serra Automotive in Grand Blanc Township, Genesee County, Michigan, is in talks to take a partial ownership in a new Saturn lead by Penske.
