An advertising campaign for shows on Adult Swim, a programming block on Cartoon Network, which is owned by Turner Broadcasting, gave local and federal law-enforcement a scare when devices were discovered on eight different bridges and roads.

The U.S. city of Boston was snarled in traffic jams January 31 as police investigated devices with flashing lights representing a cartoon character were placed around bridges and other areas throughout the city.

Different governmental agencies were brought in to help deal with the problem, which was later found to be no threat, as described by Boston Police Department spokesperson Eddy Chrispin. A bomb squad was deployed under supervision of the FBI, Boston police, the US Coast Guard, and different federal agencies.

The advertising campaign, for the widely popular program Aqua Teen Hunger Force, featuring characters from that series, was in place for two to three weeks in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and many other major US cities.

Two people have been arrested for alleged participation in this incident.

Turner Broadcasting Systems hired New York marketing firm Interference Inc. which in turn hired individuals in the various cities to place the devices promoting the cartoon’s fifth season, scheduled for a February 23 premiere. Road and rail traffic was disrupted by police as they investigated and removed the devices.

The mostly flat devices resemble two-foot-square Lite-Brites with batteries attached to the bottom and visible wires.

G4TV has dubbed the incident “Aquagate” on its broadcast of Attack of the Show segment The Feed.

It is not known why the devices took police several weeks to notice, nor why the devices were believed to be dangerous.

Friday, March 18, 2005Probably one of the first good things to come out of the 2004 Tsunami in Asia, ancient ruins were discovered in India. Fishermen along the shores report seeing the ruins along the shoreline near Mahabalipuram when the waters receded just prior to the arrival of the tsunami. Mahabalipuram is a port city of South India, dating back to the 7th century, around 60 km south from the city of Chennai in Tamil Nadu.

The fishermen reported a complex consisting of ancient temples. Some mention seeing at least 20 distinct temples, and hundreds of refrigerator-sized blocks. The walls were covered with barnacles, coral and mud. Local folklore tells of an ancient port in the area.

On the shore, three structures consisting of elaborate carvings in the shape of animals were uncovered. The structures appear to have been covered in sand, which had been wiped away by the force of the tsunami. The structures appear to belong to a port city built in the 7th century, said T. Satyamurthy, a senior archaeologist with the Archaeological Survey of India. The sculptures, representing an elephant, a lion and a flying horse, were commonly used during the Pallava dynasty, which ran from the 4th to the 9th century, archeologists say.

The temples along the shores of Mahabalipuram are already a famous feature of the city, and have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Legend has it that the city was home to seven pagodas. Underwater excavations of the area by the archaeological society, run by the Indian government and navy divers, began on Thursday.

Solve Your Financial Problems With Tax Deferred Retirement Annuities

by

Simon Cronje

The post-retirement phase of old aged individuals is full of difficulties. They are not only mentally insecure, but also feel the insecurity in financial terms. Many institutions have made available certain schemes so that the senior citizens could lead a comfortable life when they retire. Retirement annuities are the plans that have been introduced to serve this purpose. These are the schemes which have been designed to ensure a fret free life to the people when they get old. Several forms of annuity programs have come into focus in recent times, among which tax deferred annuity schemes are preferred hugely by major number of old public.

Retirement annuities are contracts between an individual and an insurance company. During his service period, the individual contributes a particular percentage of his income to his retirement annuity fund. This fund, after his retirement acts as an efficient source of income for him. It can, simply, be considered as his savings since his working period, in order to make his life comfortable and financially stable during the advanced stage. With the popularity of these programs, there are several schemes that have been introduced for the retirees. In order to avail the benefits, however, an annuitant can choose a program that is best suitable for his needs. According to his requirements, he might opt for releasing retirement annuities for a specific period of time or even for his lifetime.

Tax deferred annuity enables people to receive scheduled payments for post-retirement phase as soon as they enroll for these schemes offered by the insurance companies. The uniqueness of this program is that it provides an individual a chance to postpone paying their taxes on the interest that they earn from their annuity amount. As a result of this, the retirees get an opportunity to increase the savings that they have made in the retirement fund, which in turn increments their earning after retirement. In spite of being a bit costly, tax deferred annuity deals are preferred by the annuitants because of the tax deferment option that it offers.

Until and unless the annuitants withdraw the amount from their retirement fund, they are not likely to pay any kind of taxes, in case of the tax deferred annuity. Unlike traditional savings or investment amount, this scheme will help the old aged citizens save more money for collecting an hefty sum after they get retired, which in turn removes all the financial worries at the advanced stage of their life. As soon as the interest starts being earned, it will continue to supplement the amount. Retirement annuities, however, are classified into two categories, fixed annuity and variable annuity. In the former classification, the principal amount of the individual is guaranteed and fixed, whereas in case of the latter, it keeps on changing based on certain factors.

While choosing a scheme from available list of

retirement annuities

, you must check the annuity rates offered by different companies. The companies with higher premium rates should be selected so that the interest given on the sum is more. In case of

tax deferred annuity

, however, as soon as an individual turns 59 and a half, he is eligible to receive the payments from the annuity, beginning his phase of paying taxes.

Rod Blagojevich, the former governor of the US state of Illinois, was indicted on Thursday on charges of corruption for allegedly planning to “sell” Barack Obama’s Senate seat when the latter vacated it to become President.

Five of his advisers, including Blagojevich’s brother Robert, were also indicted. The others are former fundraiser, Christopher Kelly, former chief of staff John Harris, former aide Lon Monk, and the lobbyist William Cellini.

A jury indicted Blagojevich on sixteen felony counts, among them wire fraud, extortion conspiracy, and racketeering conspiracy. The indictment states that if convicted, the ex-governor could face over three hundred years in prison, as well as US$4 million worth of fines, including restitution.

The governor insists that he did nothing illegal, and claims that he was the victim of a politically motivated witch hunt. He pledged to fight his charges in court.

“I’m saddened and hurt but I am not surprised by the indictment. I am innocent,” read a statement released by Blagojevich. “I now will fight in the courts to clear my name. I would ask the good people of Illinois to wait for the trial and afford me the presumption of innocence that they would give to all their friends and neighbors.”

Blagojevich, a governor serving his second term, was arrested on December 9 of last year on charges of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud. Shortly thereafter, the Illinois House impeached him before the Senate, which nearly unanimously convicted him and expelled him from office.

General Motors Corporation (GM), an American automaker which has filed for bankruptcy protection, announced on Friday that the Penske Automotive Group (PAG) was selected to purchase Saturn Corporation. The transaction should be completed in October.

The purchase includes rights to the Saturn brand, its five current models and its dealership network. Two models would be discontinued, the Sky and Astra. GM would continue building the Aura sedan, the SUV’s, Vue and Outlook for at least two more years.

Saturn has 350 dealers across the United States. The dealers employ more than 13,000 jobs and sell only the Saturn autos. Canadian Saturn dealers are not included in the deal.

According to Penske future Saturn vehicles will be fuel economy focused. An expert indicated that this would move Saturn back to its roots of a entry level car company. PAG is in talks with several international automakers to replace GM after 2011. Automotive News reports that Renault Samsung Motors of Korea is the most likely candidate.

Penske wants Jill Lajdziak, Saturn’s general manager, and Tom LaSorda, former Chrysler President to head up the company when it is independent of GM.

Serra Automotive in Grand Blanc Township, Genesee County, Michigan, is in talks to take a partial ownership in a new Saturn lead by Penske.

Wikinews held an exclusive interview with Jeremy Hanke, editor of MicroFilmmaker Magazine. The magazine, which is free to read online, was started as a resource for the low budget moviemaker and features book, independent film, equipment and software reviews as well as articles on film distribution, special effects and lighting.

He says that one of the goals of the magazine is to “connect low-budget filmmakers via a feeling of community, as many…..often compete so viciously against one another in film festivals for coveted “shots” with Hollywood, that they can quickly forget their similarities.”

When asked if films made on a shoestring budget can really compete with those made for millions of dollars, he replied, “no…yes…and absolutely. Allow me to explain.” And so he does in the interview below.
