A Pakistani immigrant was convicted on Wednesday of plotting to blow up a New York City subway station in a case that shed light on police investigation tactics since the Sept 11 attacks.

Shahawar Matin Siraj, faces a maximum life sentence after a Brooklyn federal court jury convicted him of conspiring to place and detonate an explosive on the city’s mass transit system.

Siraj, 23, was arrested on the eve of the 2004 Republican National Convention on charges he planned to attack a subway station in Herald Square, the dense Manhattan shopping district that includes Macy’s flagship department store.

Siraj claimed he was entrapped by an over-zealous police informant twice his age, Egyptian Osama Eldawoody, 50, who met the Siraj in an Islamic bookstore while spying on mosques for the New York police.

Taped conversations between the two men were played by prosecutors during the trial plans were discussed to bomb the Herald Square subway station in midtown Manhattan.

Mr Eldawoody testified in 2003 and 2004 that he served as the ‘eyes and ears’ of the police and was paid more than US$100,000 to report about daily mosque activities, including prayers.

Prosecutors said Siraj had the will to carry out a plot supporting his extremist views. Their case was strengthened by the testimony of a co-conspirator who pleaded guilty in the case and an undercover police officer who said Siraj openly supported Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

The jury also heard testimony by a Bangladeshi-born undercover police officer, who met Siraj while infiltrating a Muslim neighborhood as part of an investigation following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

During one conversation, Siraj “complimented” Osama bin Laden, the officer testified.

“He said he was a talented brother and a great planner and that he hoped bin Laden planned something big for America,” said the officer, who testified under an alias because he is still involved in active investigations.

“The verdict is an important milestone in safeguarding New York against terrorist plotters whether home-grown or foreign,” said New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

A good recruitment process is very important for your company, but in more ways than you may think. The process itself speaks volumes about your company.

It is a direct reflection of the validity and professionalism of your business. Not only do your prospective employees as well as current employees use this as a standard of measure for your company, your customers and even other businesses in the industry do it as well.

As far as recruiting employees, a good recruitment process will attract the right kind of employees, the kind that you want in your company with the knowledge, skills and abilities that you want and need.

It should also be cost effective as well as time effective. If it sucks up a great deal of your time and depletes your budget, just how good and effective is it?

Why should you conduct the process carefully?

You want to conduct your recruitment process carefully from start to finish. You want to first make sure that you are attracting the right candidates not only for the positions that you want to fill, but also for the environment and attitude of your company.

It can be rather expensive to hire and train new employees so when you are recruiting you want to make sure that you are making the right choices.

Of course, there is no guarantee that your choice will be right, but you can do all that you can to minimize your risks and maximize your potential to hire the right candidate.

Which skills should you evaluate?

Thoroughly assess the position for which you are hiring. If you can, talk to other employees who are in the position or have held the position to get their input.

Catalogue all of the knowledge (education), skills (things they have learned either on the job or through training) and abilities (proven skills that they have used on the job). Also known as “KSAs,” this is a great evaluative tool for hiring the right candidate for your company.

What are the benefits of having a good recruitment process?

A good recruitment process can help cut the time involved in the searching, interviewing, hiring and training process. It can streamline these processes and make your search for viable candidates must more efficient.

It also puts forth a positive image to your customers, peers and competitors who will view you are a more legitimate, efficient business. Recruiting is rarely a private affair.

It is often very public and sometimes even rather high profile so you want to put your best, most professional face forward.

What is the procedure for outsourcing the recruitment process?

If you decide to outsource your recruiting as opposed to doing it in house there are some things that you need to consider.

Find a recruiting or headhunting company that has a proven record. You want a company that is professional and reliable but it should also be easy on your budget.

When you settle on a recruiting agency, give them a clear, accurate, thorough picture of the candidate that you want. Keep in touch with the recruiter, offering feedback and get frequent updates from them regarding the process.

You can find good, qualified, reliable employees for your company. If you are thorough and follow an organized path, you will find candidates that will prove to be great assets to your business.

New Orleans, Louisiana —After Category 4 storm Hurricane Katrina slammed into New Orleans, on the night before August 29, 2005, several flood control constructions failed. Much of the city flooded through the openings. One of these was the flood wall forming one side of the 17th Street Canal, near Lake Pontchartrain. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is the primary agency for engineering support during such emergencies. A USACE team was assessing the situation in New Orleans on the 29th, water flow was stopped September 2nd, and the breach was closed on September 5th.

A Pembroke Pines, Florida teenager killed himself Wednesday, November 19, while broadcasting on the live video site Justin.tv. After making suicide threats and being encouraged by Justin.tv viewers and Bodybuilding.com forum members, Abraham K. Biggs, 19, committed suicide by taking an overdose of opiates and benzodiazepine, which had been prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Biggs first began blogging about his planned suicide 12 hours before the actual event. He died after taking pills and lying on the bed in front of the webcam. After the broadcast, viewers who apparently thought it was a hoax posted messages such as “OMG”, “LOL”, and “hahahah”.

Hours later, after being alerted by viewers who had noticed that Biggs had stopped breathing, law enforcement and paramedics arrived, discovered his body, and covered the camera. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has reportedly confirmed Biggs’ death.

According to Montana Miller of the Bowling Green State University, the circumstances of this case were not shocking: “If it’s not recorded or documented, then it doesn’t even seem worthwhile. For today’s generation it might seem, ‘What’s the point of doing it if everyone isn’t going to see it?'”

Biggs’ sister Rosalind was angry that neither the website nor its viewers reacted soon enough to save him. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours,” she said. She described him as “very happy” and “friendly and outgoing.” “On a normal day, you couldn’t really tell that he got as low as he did.” However, he did have relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a friend.

Mental health professionals have warned about the possibility that other mentally troubled people would copy his actions. According to Dr. David Shaffer of Columbia University, “Any video showing it as heroic or romantic or glamorous could reduce the anxiety people might feel about suicide. It becomes a respectable behavior and lowers the threshold of suicide.” He and other psychiatrists recommend that potentially suicidal teens talk to others and “tell what’s going on.”

Announced early Wednesday morning at Nokia’s GoEvent, in a plan to expand the company’s revenue, Finland-based company Nokia Inc. is developing a mobile phone similar to its rival iPhone, which will be available in the near future for Nokia customers. The phone is expected to be available by 2008.

Most of the features are the same as the iPhone’s. They include music, games, and many other features, even ones that the iPhone may not have. Ovi (in Finnish meaning “Door”) will be the door for more than 2 million songs and games available for download on the new device. Users will be able to download wirelessly in their own home or anywhere there is access to a computer.

But this is not the first time Nokia has made an attempt like this to increase its revenue. In October of 2003 the company revealed the N-Gage, a game-playing cell phone, but was “stocked-out” due to poor sales. The N95 smartphone, which was released in the U.S. on April 7, 2007 (before the iPhone on June 29, 2007) includes WiFi, a GPS, a music player, and a 5 megapixel digital camera. The three other phones that were revealed at the event in London will be in-stock next quarter. The new N81 and the modified N95 smartphones were among the revealed at yesterday’s event; the N81 is a new member to Nokia’s smartphone family; the N95 has been modified by having more memory and a sleeker LCD screen.

When Nokia was asked about the striking similarity between this and the iPhone, Nokia’s Executive Vice President and General Manager of Multimedia, Anssi Vanjoki, said, “If there is something good in the world then we copy with pride.”

Nokia first demoed their iPhone rival August 29th. During their demo they omitted the fact that the demo was for the software to be in use, not the actual hardware.[1]

If you’re like a lot of people you may have casually thought about getting a federal firearms license, or (FFL). And while it’s not right for everyone, it’s certainly an important license to have if you’re interested in dealing in firearms. It’s also very important if you’re a collector of firearms, specifically (C&R) curios and relics type firearms.

One important factor that needs to be noted is that getting a federal firearms license is not an easy task. Any time that you have to deal with the government and any associated red tape or bureaucracy, you’re almost guaranteed that it won’t be easy. Unfortunately, getting an FFL is no different. So with that said, let’s take a closer look at the process of applying and some of the requirements.

The first thing you’ll need to acquire is an application. Generally there are two types of applications that pertain to getting a Federal Firearms License. These are ATF form 7 (F 5310.12), and ATF form 7CR (F 5310.16). Form 7 is the basic federal firearms license application, and form 7CR is the application that you’ll use if you want to become a licensed curio and relic collector.

Even though it’s possible to fill out and submit most government forms and applications online, a Federal Firearms License application is not one of them. The reason for this is that you will need to submit photographs and fingerprints in order to complete the application process. You can either request these forms online, or call the ATF directly and request them. Once requested, they’ll be mailed to you.

Now before you fill out your application, there a few basic requirements that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says you must meet in order to become licensed. These are as follows:

The first is that you’re 21 years of age or older.

The second is that you’re not prohibited from possessing firearms. The third is that you haven’t violated any regulations of the Gun Control Act. The fourth is that you can’t lie on your application, or fail to disclose information on it. The fifth is that you have an approved location or premises that will be used for conducting business or for your gun collection.

Furthermore, once you’ve met those requirements, you’ll also be required to confirm that:

Any business that you’re intending to conduct at the licensed location is not prohibited under any state or local laws.

That you’ll comply with any local or state laws that may pertain to your business within 30 days of approval of your license.

That you will not do any business until such time as you have met all of the local and state laws that pertain to your business.

You must notify your local Chief of Police via a form, that you intend to apply for a license, and where the licensed location will be.

And finally, you’ll need to provide some type of secure storage and safety devices for any firearms that are sold at your location.

Assuming that you’ve done everything correctly, which is often not the case due to the complexity of the application process, you’ll just have to sit back and wait until you receive notice telling you whether you’ve been approved or denied.

Keep in mind that it’s essential that you fill out your application correctly the first time. Failure to do so could jeopardize your chances at getting a Federal Firearms License, or at the very least substantially increase the time it takes to be approved. Just remember to pay close attention to the details when filling out the application. And finally, don’t forget to keep your fingers crossed!

The most recent global financial crisis has severely affected Portugal in its quest towards economic development. Many of the construction developments in the country were suddenly halted because of the lack of continued financing from foreign investors and purchasers.

Because of its rapid economic growth, the cost of living in Portugal reached amongst the top ten in the European Union. Now, with its economy in the doldrums, the cost of living has remained high. Despite this trend, overall, the cost of living in Portugal remains lower compared to the United Kingdom and France.

The cost of living of an individual depends mainly on two factors, the location and the preferences of the individual. The following are some of the aspects of cost of living in Portugal that must be considered before deciding on moving to the country:

Food Costs. Depending on where you eat, a meal can cost between 6.00 until 30.00 for two people. For drinks, beer can cost between 1.60 and 2.00, while wine can set you back 3.55 for a mid range quality bottle. For basic necessities such as bread ( 1.10), one dozen eggs ( 1.55), one liter of milk ( 0.75), one kilogram of cheese ( 6.00) and skinless deboned chicken breast for a kilo ( 5.30). Do remember these are locally produced items and if the individual wants imported quality food, the cost would be much higher.

Clothing Costs. Portugal boasts of a vibrant local fashion scene that is comparable to the many brands lining catwalks in New York and Milan. These also cost much lower compared to those available in the UK or in France. Aside from these lines, the many shopping malls carry foreign branded clothing products. Also, electronic gadgets and appliances also cost lower in Portugal. Options to purchase these items are available in the big malls or even street vendors and flea markets scattered throughout the country. The problem is, though the cost may be lower, the quality may be a problem.

Housing Costs. The housing cost of living in Portugal varies across the areas in the country. Among the higher costing areas are the capital city of Lisbon or the urbanized metropolis of Cascais while because of its tourist centric accommodations, the Algarve and the Silver Coast rank amongst the most expensive. If the expat though opts to live in the inland northern area of Portugal, the cost of rentals or purchase of properties would be much lower compared to the urban and touristy areas of the country.

Financial Costs. Being apprised of the taxes and other fees that need to be paid when computing for cost of living in Portugal. These include income tax payable, value added taxes, licensing and other fees. Depending on what your financial activity would be in the country, one needs to obtain a Numero de identificacao or NIE and a tax card or cartao de contribuinte to be a valid taxpayer in the country.

As can be seen, there are many aspects of the cost of living in Portugal that needs to be considered and computed before any decision to move can be made. Having a budget would also require the expat to fully understand the cost of living in Portugal.
